Principles of parking lot lighting design
When developing a car park lighting project, special attention is paid to the entry and exit zones, since these zones are considered high-risk areas. According to the regulations, during daylight hours, the horizontal illumination of these areas must be at least 200 lux, and on the site itself - at least 100 lux. If natural lighting in the parking lot is not enough, additional lighting systems must be installed. During dark hours, the general light on the site must be at least 30 lux, and in the entry and exit areas - more than 60 lux.
Parking payment areas, stairs, elevators, passage and crowd areas must have a horizontal illumination level on the floor of at least 60 lux, and a cylindrical illumination level of 10 lux.
The amount of light in the parking lot depends on the density of vehicle traffic. According to Moscow regulations, a low-traffic parking lot must have horizontal illumination of 7 lux and cylindrical illumination of 1 lux, and with high traffic - from 60 lx and 10 lx respectively.
When designing lighting in above-ground or underground parking, it is necessary to take into account the distribution of the luminous flux. Bright, directional beams will interfere with drivers and pedestrians, and will reduce the safety of the transport area. The light in the parking lot should be uniform, without glare and sharp shadows.
The design is also affected by the presence of access control and video surveillance systems. In the area where the cameras are located, the light should be bright enough and uniform to make out faces and license plates of cars. At the same time, the light should not interfere with (overexpose) the cameras. Depending on the type of cameras, different lamps are used, but their power should be at least 50 lx.

Types of luminous flux distribution:
- Lighting near areas with limited width. Used on sidewalks near parking lots.
- Side light distribution. Suitable for parking lots located next to the roadway.

- Lighting across the width with a luminaire near a wall or fence. Used to protect the perimeter.
- Circular lighting. Suitable for intersections in large parking lots.
- Square lighting. Used at intersections of parking lot sections with high traffic, in the center of the roadway.

Lighting of parking lots is regulated by the standards DIN 67528, DIN 5035 part 5, DIN VDE 0108 part 1, part 6, as well as the regulatory requirements of GOST, in terms of requirements for outdoor utility lighting. Lighting standards for car parks in Moscow are regulated by SP 52.13330.2011, MGSN, GOST 26824-10, etc.
Parking lot illumination standards
Regardless of location, parking lots are considered potentially dangerous objects. Therefore, parking lot lighting helps prevent accidents, ensures the safety of drivers, pedestrians and vehicles.
Illumination standards for individual zones are calculated based on the functional purpose. The light should be bright, but not blind drivers. To solve this problem, the following conditions must be taken into account when zonal lighting is arranged.
- General illumination level. Determined based on the intensity of parking lot visits. For example, for a small parking lot, a horizontal illumination level of 7 lux is sufficient. For large parking lots, this figure is at least 15 lux. If the attendance is uneven, a lighting control system is provided. The cylindrical lighting level is the same for all objects and is 1 lux.
- Pedestrian area lighting. This includes not only crossings, but also evacuation routes. Considering that we are talking about people's safety, the illumination level of such areas varies within 100-150 lux.
- Vehicle traffic zones. Horizontal illumination is not lower than 60 lux, cylindrical - from 10 lux. This ensures the safe movement of vehicles. At the same time, the uniformity of the distribution of the light flux is taken into account so that there are no blinding and very darkened areas.
- Entry-exit. For such areas, the illumination level is set at 200 lux. This rule also applies to places with large crowds of people: ticket offices, elevators, stairs.
