Lighting of winter gardens and greenhouses

A winter garden and lighting are inseparable concepts. Any plants develop due to photosynthesis, which contributes to the formation of essential nutrients. Three factors are necessary for photosynthesis processes: light, oxygen and water. Comfortable lighting can be natural or artificial, but in the second case it is important to choose the right lighting equipment.

If the lighting of the winter garden is insufficient, gardeners inevitably face the following problems:

  • Slow growth;
  • Fragility of stems;
  • Darkening or lightening of leaf blades;
  • Weak yield;
  • Decreased taste quality of fruits;
  • Common diseases of cultivated plants.

Lighting of the winter garden and greenhouses cannot be done with lamps alone. This is due to the fact that plants are light-loving and shade-loving, which implies different illumination intensity and duration of daylight hours. When designing lighting systems in winter gardens, the uniformity of illumination is also taken into account.

The following lighting equipment can be used to illuminate a greenhouse:

  1. Incandescent lamps are the most budget-friendly, but far from the best option;
  2. Fluorescent lamps provide cold and warm white lighting, but the intensity of greenhouse lighting depends on the voltage in the network;
  3. Sodium lamps have good light output in relation to energy consumption, but are unsafe to operate;
  4. Mercury lamps are often used in greenhouses, but need to be disposed of;
  5. Metal halide lamps are installed in greenhouses, but are short-lived, especially with frequent switching on;
  6. LED lamps LED lamps or phytolamps with adjustable lighting.

LED lighting of plants with lamps and spotlights is suitable for lighting greenhouses; it is designed for a long service life and is characterized by economical energy consumption.

Lighting standards and features

The lighting design of greenhouse lighting is always developed taking into account the individual characteristics of each plant species. Lighting equipment with a radiation intensity of 1000-5000 lux is used.

When making calculations, the duration of daylight is taken into account. For some plants it is up to 12 hours, for others - no more than 14-16 hours. Plants should be illuminated for at least 10 hours a day.

Stages of work

  1. We collect initial data on-site;
  2. We develop lighting design and prepare a virtual model in 2D or 3D format;
  3. We carry out the necessary lighting calculations based on the actual characteristics of the equipment;
  4. We form an order for the manufacture of LED lamps and mounting structures;
  5. We carry out electrical installation work.

We use LED lighting to implement the project. Lighting devices are assembled and tested at our plant in China.

Standards and Requirements for Interior Lighting in Winter Gardens and Greenhouses

Standards for interior lighting in winter gardens depend on several factors, such as the type of plants, their light requirements, the size of the room, and the availability of natural light. Here are some general guidelines:

  1. Light Intensity: It is generally recommended to provide 1000-2000 lux of artificial light for most plants. However, some tropical plants may require higher light intensities (up to 5000 lux).
  2. Light Duration: Most plants need 12-16 hours of light per day. This can be achieved by using timers to turn the lights on and off automatically.
  3. Light Spectrum: Plants grow best under broad-spectrum light, which contains all the wavelengths they need. Using special phytolamps or LED lamps with a high CRI (Color Rendering Index) can be useful to provide an optimal light spectrum.
  4. Positioning and direction of light: plants should receive uniform lighting from all sides. Pendant lights or special lamps with adjustable light direction can be useful to provide uniform lighting.
  5. Considering natural light: if the winter garden has access to natural light, it must be taken into account when planning the interior lighting. Lighting should complement natural light and provide uniform lighting throughout the day.
