Museum Lighting

A museum is not just an exhibition hall. It is a multifunctional facility with a large number of rooms. The right solution would be to install comprehensive lighting throughout the building: general, decorative, exhibition, emergency and evacuation.

Fossa Electric designs, manufactures and installs LED lighting in all areas of the museum:

  1. Entrance areas;
  2. Exhibition halls and permanent exhibitions;
  3. Lobby and cloakrooms;
  4. Cafe;
  5. Utility rooms and research staff offices;
  6. Stairways and corridors;
  7. Souvenir shops.

Lamps and lighting fixtures are selected individually for each room, taking into account current recommendations and regulatory requirements.

Comprehensive lighting of the museum premises should not only ensure the comfort of visitors and employees, but also to create conditions in which the exhibited items are presented in the most favorable light. In a museum or art gallery, light should complement the works of art, enhancing the effect of masterpieces on the viewer. At the same time, different works (paintings, sculptures, historical objects) should be illuminated differently in order to correctly place light accents, but not to harm the masterpiece.

The purpose of exhibition lighting is to correctly focus visitors' attention on the exhibits. However, most exhibits cannot be displayed in natural light: ultraviolet light is harmful to paints.

To solve this problem, exhibition lighting is used, which allows:

  • To create a composition that most accurately conveys the perception of the color palette, texture and shape;
  • To provide a safe environment for exhibits;
  • To attract visitors;
  • To correspond to the general theme of the exhibition.

LED Lighting for Museums and Exhibition Halls

Lighting exhibits in a museum is key to creating an attractive and safe environment that allows visitors to enjoy the exhibition and see the exhibits in all their glory. Using LED lighting to illuminate exhibits in a museum also has a number of advantages:

  1. LED lamps provide high color rendering, which allows you to accurately convey the colors of exhibits, preserving their natural appearance and quality.
  2. LED lighting can be easily adjusted in intensity and color temperature, which allows you to create different lighting effects and adjust it to the specific requirements of exhibits.
  3. LED lamps consume less energy and have a longer service life compared to traditional light sources, which helps reduce energy and maintenance costs.
  4. LEDs emit a minimal amount of heat, making them an ideal choice for lighting sensitive exhibits that can be damaged when exposed to heat.
  5. LED lamps are compact and allow you to create various shapes and configurations of lighting, which helps emphasize the uniqueness of each exhibit and create an atmosphere that matches its style.
  6. LEDs do not contain mercury or other hazardous substances, making them safe for use in museum premises and ensuring the safety of exhibits.

Features of painting lighting

When installing lighting for paintings in museums, well-thought-out lighting is necessary so that visitors can see even the smallest details of the work. Intense light is harmful to paintings and causes the paints to fade and the canvas itself to crack.

When organizing the lighting of an art gallery, it is necessary to maintain a balance and spectrum of illumination. For example, ultraviolet light is harmful to painting: short light waves create intense lighting. In museums, it is better to use the infrared spectrum, but it worsens visual perception.

Fossa Electric uses lighting and protection equipment based on LED technology. LEDs provide soft but bright enough light that does not harm the exhibited paintings, while providing good visibility.

Features of light for exhibiting museum objects

  • The angle of incidence of the light beam is very important for three-dimensional objects. For example, for stucco and bas-reliefs, an angle of 30 degrees is considered optimal lighting. For sculpture exhibitions, the combination of light and shadow plays an important role. Correctly selected reflections enhance perception, give sculptures an aura of mystery and focus attention on individual elements.
  • With flat objects, we use accent lighting, which is provided by focused beams. Separating the illumination intensity of objects creates the desired contrast, dividing the composition into dark and light zones.
  • For some exhibitions, flood lighting is more suitable than accent lighting, so each project requires an individual approach.

Features of art gallery lighting

Gallery lighting plays an important role in creating an atmosphere and shaping the perception of works of art. Here are some features of exhibition lighting:

  • The main purpose of gallery lighting is to provide uniform and sufficient illumination of each painting. This allows viewers to see the details and colors of the artwork without distortion.
  • The choice of color temperature of lighting affects the perception of paintings. Warm shades such as 2700-3000K are often used to create a cozy and pleasant atmosphere.
  • It is necessary to maintain an optimal level of illumination of paintings in galleries. Typically, this is 50-100 lux for oil paintings and 150-200 lux for watercolors.
  • The angle of lighting is also important for the proper display of artworks. It should be such as to avoid reflections and glare on the surface of the painting.
  • The ability to adjust the brightness of the lighting allows you to create different effects and adapt the lighting to specific works of art or exhibitions.
  • Lamps should be installed in such a way as to avoid shadows on the paintings and provide uniform illumination. This may require the use of different types of lamps, such as directional spotlights or track systems.

Standards and requirements for museum lighting

Illumination standards are regulated by the requirements of SNiP and SanPiN. The choice of light depends on the material from which the art object is made:

  • Fabric, paper, watercolor - 50 lux;
  • Oil paint - 150 lux;
  • Metal and precious stones - 500 lx.

IMPORTANT. Even with gentle light, exhibits cannot be displayed permanently. The recommendations for museum workers include a clause stating that exhibits should be given a break every 3 years.
